Meet the Orchid cactus, a unique and strange succulent! In the wild, these mostly epiphytic plants grow on branches or trunks of trees rather than developing roots in the ground.
The Orchid Cactus displays magnificent blooms every spring! To encourage flowering, repot your Orchid Cactus as infrequently as possible; they prefer to be a little root-bound!
LOCATION & LIGHT:
Jungle epiphytes like the Orchid Cactus require BRIGHT INDIRECT light, and can handle a few hours of direct sun. Their preferred home is a spot that stays bright enough to read (without turning on a light, and without straining your eyes), for most of the day. Pulled back a few feet from a South or West-facing window is ideal, but hanging directly in an East or North-facing window should also provide enough light to keep these unique growers happy!
WATER :
Water when the soil is dry, and think of this plant as a slightly-more-thirsty cactus. (That is, after all, exactly what it is). You’ll know its ready for water when its succulent stems (or cladodes) feel more pliable than usual. This is a sign that the plant is storing less water, and is ready for a drink!
