Once described by Charles Darwin as “one of the most wonderful [plants] in the world”, the Venus Fly Trap is likely the most famous member of the carnivorous plant family. This meat-eater certainly has a flair for the dramatic - it draws in small insects with its sweet nectar, only to snap shut around them and eat them for dinner. Though they don’t grow on Venus, they may very well be as close to alien life as we’ll get.
LOCATION AND LIGHT:
Venus Fly Traps are happiest in BRIGHT INDIRECT LIGHT. This plant may benefit from a few hours of DIRECT LIGHT each day, particularly through our relatively dark Canadian winters, but watch for scorching on the leaves and plants. Venus Fly Traps are not low-light tolerant. West-facing and East-facing windows will likely make the best homes for these tropical anomalies.
WATER:
As these plants are naturally found in damp, boggy environments, a fine balance of moisture is key in their overall health. These plants require soil that is evenly moist but not waterlogged, so providing adequate drainage is important. Bottom watering can be advantageous for this species, as can using distilled water. Allow soil to dry only slightly between waterings.
