The confusing nature of botanical nomenclature really comes to a head for the Fern Leaf Cactus - which is NOT a fern, does not technically have leaves, and doesn’t look much like a cactus.

These unique epiphytes evolved (over thousands of years) from cactus, as they made their way into shadier parts of Central and Southern America. (In the desert, cactus lost their leaves to conserve water, as leaves result in increased water loss through transpiration.) Instead of leaves, the Fern Leaf Cactus developed cladodes – leaf like structures that are actually flattened stems – growing in a zig-zag pattern to capture light from every direction. These cladodes store water, making the Fern Leaf Cactus a relatively drought tolerant house plant.

Once a year (in nature), the Fern Leaf Cactus displays a magnificent 12” bloom that lasts only for ONE NIGHT! Seeing this ephemeral beauty in our homes is rare, but it happens! To encourage flowering, repot your Fern Leaf Cactus as infrequently as possible; they prefer to be a little root-bound!

LOCATION & LIGHT:

Jungle epiphytes like the Fern Leaf Cactus require BRIGHT INDIRECT light, and can handle a few hours of direct sun. Their preferred home is a spot that stays bright enough to read (without turning on a light, and without straining your eyes), for most of the day. Pulled back a few feet from a South or West-facing window is ideal, but hanging directly in an East or North-facing window should also provide enough light to keep these unique growers happy!

WATER :

Water when the soil is dry, and think of this plant as a slightly-more-thirsty cactus. (That is, after all, exactly what it is). You’ll know its ready for water when its succulent stems (or cladodes) feel more pliable than usual. This is a sign that the plant is storing less water, and is ready for a drink!
